Baptism

Baptism marks the beginning of a journey with God which continues for the rest of our lives…….

Since the very beginnings of the Church men, women and children have been baptised as a sign of their choice to follow the way of Jesus Christ. The water of Baptism has come to symbolise the refreshing and cleansing power of the Holy Spirit. The Church of England offers Baptism to those who are able to make the public declaration for themselves, and to young children, for whom the promises are made on their behalf by parents and godparents. Baptism, or Christening, is also a way in which many families choose to give thanks for the new life of a child.

We are delighted to welcome all those who wish to join the worldwide church through Baptism and offer a variety of ways for this to happen in each of the churches of our Benefice.

Baptism for those who are old enough to make their own decision takes place by arrangement with the Priest-in-Charge. Following conversation, and the completion of any preparation needed, a service of Baptism will be arranged, usually in the context of Sunday worship. From time to time Confirmations are also held in the Benefice and it may be appropriate to combine this Sacrament with Baptism.

Baptism for babies and young children usually take place in the context of Sunday worship, so that the child can be welcomed into the church family by the congregation. Parents and godparents are asked to make the promises on behalf of the child and are also asked to commit to helping the child to grow in the Christian faith, until they are old enough to make the promises for themselves at Confirmation.

Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child is a service offered to those who want to mark the birth of their child but are not yet ready to make the commitment of Baptism. The service usually takes place by arrangement with the family, but may be part of Sunday worship. It is an opportunity to give thanks for new life and to pray with parents for the responsibilities that lie ahead.
